Block Paving vs. Resin: Which is Best for Your Home?
There is no universal winner
Block paving and resin-bound surfacing are systems, not just appearances. The suitable choice depends on the site, intended loading, levels, drainage, base, access, maintenance expectations, available products, budget and the contractor’s competent specification.
Discuss block paving as a complete construction
Block type, laying pattern, edge restraint, bedding, joints, base and drainage all affect the proposal. Individual units can sometimes be lifted for access or replacement, but a repair may still vary in colour or settlement. Maintenance needs depend on the blocks, joints, surroundings and use.
Discuss resin bound as a named system
Resin, aggregate, mixing, substrate, base, edges, drainage and installation conditions should be specified together. A resin-bound surface may be permeable when the complete construction is designed that way, but the surface alone does not prove drainage performance, planning compliance or suitability for the site.
Do not publish a universal price or lifespan
Excavation, disposal, access, area, levels, drainage, edge details, base condition, product and location can materially change cost and programme. Service life also depends on design, products, workmanship, loading, ground movement and maintenance. Use a measured site estimate and written warranty terms rather than a generic cost-per-square-metre or fixed lifespan promise.
Compare equivalent scopes
Itemise preparation, base, drainage, restraints, surface system, waste, access assumptions, VAT and exclusions. If one option is an overlay and another is a full excavation, make that difference obvious. Confirm who is responsible for permissions, specialist design and any work by others.
Use samples and evidence
Show actual product samples, technical information and permissioned photographs of comparable completed work. Colours change with aggregate, batch, lighting, weathering and screen display. Ask how a proposed repair or extension is likely to meet an older surface.
Use the visual concept carefully
A contractor can use Driveway Visualiser to create illustrative block-paving and resin concepts on a property photo. AI may change colours, borders, pattern, levels or surrounding details. Review the image and confirm the choice with the survey, samples and written specification.
A useful customer checklist
- What complete construction and named products are included?
- How were the base and drainage assessed?
- Which maintenance and warranty terms apply?
- What assumptions, exclusions and permissions are recorded?
- Is the comparison based on equivalent preparation and scope?
